Berries, Berries Everywhere!
Picking berries is one of my favorite subsistence activities. I love eating salmon and halibut, but the getting and cleaning of said fish is less up my alley. By golly, I’ll do it though. It’s worth it.
That said, berry season is my favorite time of year. We don’t have a huge number of raspberry bushes, but we somehow manage to get nearly a gallon of berries every year. It doesn’t stop there though! It’s now blueberry season in South Central Alaska. And if you know where to go, the berries are thick, and, literally, ripe for the picking.
In just an hour, my friend and I – and our kids who “helped,” picked about a gallon of blueberries. The only reason we quit picking was because our sons were over it. At ages almost 2 and almost 3, they just weren’t quite into it. Although, they didn’t hate the berries – I have small, purple hand prints all over my lime green coat. 🙂
You know how songs get stuck in your head? Well, children’s books do too. But, generally in a better way. All day long, I keep repeating a line from Jamberry – “Rumble and ramble through blackberry bramble. Billions of berries for blackberry jamble.” It’s one of my favorite children’s books (I’ll include my affiliate link below, in case you’re interested). The rhythm is fantastic and fun – and even though the illustrations aren’t super sophisticated, the imagery is fantastic… and I love the way the child interacts with all of the creatures and the natural elements. But, this post isn’t meant to be a book review. (Still, if you want the book, use my link at the bottom, if you’d like to help me offset blog costs.) Ultimately, I just love berries.
Anyway, I can’t wait to make some wonderful things with all of our raspberries, and rhubarb, and blueberries and crabapples – all harvested from our own efforts and activities. There’s the beer, for sure… but I’m thinking of liqueurs, pies, muffins, even filling for cakes! I was going to wait, but I couldn’t stop myself tonight… and made this beautiful three-berry crumble with raspberries and blueberries I picked – plus strawberries I picked from Costco.. It’s almost healthy except for all the sugar! Ha! I love using banana and coconut oil in lieu of butter, whenever it makes sense to do so.
